Angels are not simply Christmas ornaments. For many people they are a year-round presence in our lives. According to the Associated Press 77 percent of adults believe these ethereal beings are real. (Source: CBS NEWS) in fact nearly 8 in 10 Americans believe in Angels, whether they are religious or not.
Belief in Angels may have begun in ancient times, but today belief in angels has nothing to do with religion at all. Numerous people have had strange experiences that they feel someone or something was protecting them from harm, comforting them in times of great sadness and despair, or assisting them during emergencies. The revered 5th Century philosopher St. Augustine wrote that “Every visible thing in this world is put in the charge of an angel”.
What Do you Believe?
The first story for you to consider was of a truck driver who lost his way in an ice storm. Suddenly a man with wings appeared beside him and showed him the way to safety. Some say this was assistance from the Traveling Angel.
A second story was of a woman who had been given a gold heirloom bracelet from her mother, worth well over $5,000. While actually visiting her Mother she noticed she was missing the bracelet. She looked everywhere. Finally she got down on her knees, weeping and in a panic. She heard a soft yet commanding voice in her head, say, “Take off the silver bracelet you have on your left arm and you will find it.” Thinking this odd she nevertheless immediately took off the silver bracelet and went deep into her Mother’s closet to put it in the safe. There on a pile of old clothes was the heirloom bracelet. Her Mother had picked it up and forgotten where she placed it.
When the writer Allan Gurganus was asked for a story to inspire a piece of music, he remembered a surreal dream in which a white “something” plummeted into his backyard. Instantly, he sat down and penned the critically acclaimed “It Had Wings,” a tale about a widow who is healed by a wounded angel. It has been said it was the Angel of Creativity that had visited him.
Lewis H. Redner was the composer of the Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” when he had hit a creative block it has been said the Angel of Composing helped him. The night before the song was to be performed, still unable to think of a tune to accompany Philip Brooks’ lyrics, Redner finally gave up and went to sleep. He was roused by an angel humming a strain of music into his ear, and promptly wrote the famous tune.
However ancient the relationship between humans and the thought of angels, it is also as modern as a brand-new millennium. A nurse recently heard saying she was stunned by the sight of a large, glowing angel helping the surgeon on call perform an arduous heart transplant procedure. Afterward as the surgeon thanked his team and accepted their congratulations he confided that his fingers had been moved by a force far greater than his own.
These are just a few wonderful stories of people’s experiences with angels. No matter what your belief, there can be no denying these are wonderful stories to soothe the soul. Who knows, maybe soon you may have your own story to tell!
